The Government has relased the ‘official’ cull numbers for 2017 and they make for grim reading. 19,274 badgers died this year across 19 cull zones. The figures for the original Somerset and Gloucestershire zones, are not included.
What is very interesting though, is that at day 28, Natural England revised the targets for all the 11 new zones. This shows that the Government does not have an accurate knowledge of badger numbers in the cull areas.
We’ll post more once we’ve had a chance to analyse the figures in more depth. But a quick comparison shows that numbers ‘culled’ this year is consistent with last year. In 2016, 10,886 badgers were killed across 10 zones, in 2017, 19,274 badgers lost their lives, across 19 zones.
But these figures do not deter badger protectors. As long as the cull continues, we’ll carry on standing up for badgers, conservation and science.
