Up with the larks this morning to check on trail cameras. Despite finding their sett trashed yesterday evening, these resilient creatures continue to thrive.
A number of entrances were unscathed by the hedge-cutting contractor which was a big relief. Now they just have to survive the cull which is sadly iminent. If you would like to support us, petrol money and money to buy batteries for our thermal and night vision equipment, then we would be very grateful. Here we go again 🙁

“The idea is to eliminate ALL badgers that live anywhere near cattle …”

In 2018, this shocking statement was made at a public meeting in Christow from a veterinary surgeon and cull company director. Aimed at recruiting new landowners to cull badgers on their land, it confirms fears held by badger protectors that badgers are facing annihilation across Devon.
The NFU TB advisor at the same meeting was recorded as stating “We’ve tried to make sure we have every farm around the National Trust land signed up. We can then draw all the badgers out”.
On Saturday 18th August from 12.30 pm at Belmont Park members of Devon and Cornwall Against the Badger Cull will be joined by members of the public and other groups to march in Exeter, with confirmed guest speakers, Dr Richard Meyer, Zoologist, and Author of Fate of the Badger, Nigel Palmer, Save Me and Team Badger, Luke Pollard MP, Shadow Minister for Water, Flooding and Coastal Communities, Peter Martin, former Chair of the Badger Trust, to raise awareness about the plight of the Devon and Cornish badgers – and those across the country – as more and more badgers in ever-increasing numbers of cull zones will be killed this year, we will more than likely see two thirds of the County culling this year. Jenny Pike from Devon Badger Group says “Sadly, no badgers are safe anywhere any more. This year, culling will take place near the Killerton Estate. Legally, cull operatives can trap and kill badgers right on its boundary. And yet the National Trust has spent hundreds of thousands of pounds vaccinating some 539 badgers on this huge estate. But with four years of culling followed by an indefinite period of so-called supplementary culling how many badgers will survive here? A tiny fraction – if we’re lucky. It’s appalling”
Luckily, Ben Bradshaw MP is standing up for conservation, science, badgers – and farmers when he says ““I would like to congratulate everyone here today. You are helping keep this unscientific and counterproductive Tory Government policy in the public eye. We badly need a Labour Government with policy based on evidence, not prejudice.”
It is certain that thousands of badgers will die in Devon and Cornwall during 2018 and it is an unnecessary and amoral waste of life. Devon and Cornwall have already lost 10,559 badgers. Right now, it’s important to remember that when badgers killed during culling operations in 2016 were tested for TB only a tiny fraction were found to be infected and the available scientific evidence suggests that at most 1% will have been potentially infectious. Statistics such as these make the whole badger cull a sad travesty.

A snapshot of what we are up against when it comes to taking the cattle disease seriously when the focus is on badgers.Having a few minutes spare....we remembered that when checking on ibtb website a few years back Home Farm in Dunster , was under restriction due to a BOVINE Tuberculosis breakdown. Looking again we can see it is under restriction again since March 2018.
You would think that what with the government's determination to make the country Btb free there would be strict rules in place to prevent the spread of infection between known hosts and vectors (be they hunt hounds other cattle or sheep and not just seek to wipe out a nocturnal rural resident, the badger with a proven infection rate of under 4%) with those capable of spreading infection even less!

So where is the rationale behind holding not one but TWO major "country" shows a couple of weeks apart on grounds grazed by cattle with a current bTb breakdown?
At these shows horses, hounds, sheep, cattle and camels(!) from the local area are paraded around an area which has been slaughtering badgers for 6 years with NO improvements in the rates of bTB amongst cattle. It’s hardly surprising when APHA make taking animals to these shows exempt from pre and post movement testing if they are present for under 24 hours.

So yes...perfectly acceptable to allow all this unrestricted movement to ground grazed by a herd infected with bTB, the bacterium known to stay present on soil for months but meanwhile carry on killing the animals least likely to be the cause of the infection.
