Somerset Against The Badger Cull

Our badgers are loved not just in Britain but all around the world as shown by one person’s recent experience in Somerset.

Coming from Australia and with a passion for wildlife, she was really keen to see a badger in the wild but didn’t know how to go about it. Luckily, she ended up talking to one of our more experienced members who told her of a secret location where she was almost guaranteed to see them. Here’s her story in her own words:

“Seeing a wild badger or badgers was my dearest wish for the trip, and thanks to your help, my wish came true. More beautifully than I can ever have imagined! We didn’t go to get the best photographs in the world but just to see and watch the badgers. We arrived at about 8.30pm and the badgers were already out of their sett which we hadn’t been expecting. We were astonished to see there were five badgers; the parents and three cubs. The cubs were wrestling and bumping into each other, sniffing the air and peering about. We were overjoyed to see the badger family in the beautiful woodland environment.

As quiet as we were, something sent them back down the burrow after a couple of minutes, so we waited, scarcely daring to breathe, and they emerged again after about 10minutes. Then we were able to observe them for another 20 minutes or so. I never thought we would see a whole family of badgers. It was truly a once in a lifetime experience for me, and my English friends who had also never seen a live badger, were as thrilled as I was”.

If you would like to continue to see badgers in our British countryside then please get out and find a local sett (or two) and monitor it. If you notice anything out of the ordinary then contact us.
